July 10 Meeting of Spruce Pine Kiwanis
On July 10, Jim Swaim, Building Committee chairman of the Mitchell-Yancey Chapter of Habitat for Humanity spoke to Spruce Pine Kiwanis about the growing need of decent, affordablt housing for people in our area. Jim reported that M-Y Habitat has averaged building one house per year for the past 13 years and currently has two houses under construction - one in Yancey County and one in Mitchell. Jim also spoke about a project by M-Y Habitat for Humanity to get local students involved by initiating a collaborative program with Yancey County Schools, Mitchell County Schools and Mayland Community College to build a construction trades job training facility adjacent to Mountain Heritage High School on property donated by Yancey County Schools. Students will learn (and hopefully be encouraged to stay in school) by using industry-level tools to build modular homes at the facility for sale to the public. Profits on home sales will go into an 'evergreen fund' used to finance more houses, including Habitat homes for partner families when enough profit has been accumulated. Jim stated the cost of the new facility would be $700,000 and that Habitat is looking to the community for help in raising funds to meet this cost. Through a fund raising effort called “Pillars of Habitat,” those interested in contributing to this fund can make a one time commitment of $500 per year for 5 years as a “Gold Pillar” or $250 per year for 5 years as a “Silver Pillar.” Contact Jim Swaim at 828-675-9592 or Marvin Holland at 828-682-6467 to contribute. Kiwanis thanks Jim Swaim for sharing with the group about the important work being done by the Mitchell-Yancey Habitat for Humanity.
