March 27, 2007 Meeting of Spruce Pine Kiwanis
On March 27, members of the Carolina Theatre Preservation Association spoke to Kiwanians about the future of the Carolina Theatre in downtown Spruce Pine. Association member Bob Hensley introduced the group to Reid Leonard and Greer Lampert from the Piedmont Players Theatre in Salisbury, NC. After visiting Spruce Pine and touring the Carolina Theatre, Leonard and Lampert were impressed with the area and excited about the many ways the theatre could be utilized. They are now members of the Carolina Theatre Preservation Association and actively involved in the restoration process. Leonard shared with the group about Spruce Pine’s need for a place to showcase local talent as well as talent from other areas and the business it would draw as a result. Bob Hensley concluded with the statement that “what some have seen as a run down building needing to be demolished could potentially become the focal point of the community and the key point of economic revitalization.”
The Carolina Theatre Association hopes to involve Kiwanis in their efforts to revitalize the theatre by focusing on events designed to attract and involve the young people of our area.
