April 3 Meeting of Spruce Pine Kiwanis
At the April 3 meeting of Spruce Pine Kiwanis, John Templeton, Youth Pastor of Spruce Pine First Baptist spoke to the group about the time he spent on the Appalachian Trail. John told the group that from childhood, his parents had always instilled in him a love for God’s creation, so after spending some time studying geology at Chapel Hill and then attending Divinity School, John decided to hike the entire 2,174 miles of the Appalachian Trail. He left from Maine in mid-June, hiking approximately 20 miles each day. John said he met lots of interesting people on the trail as he hiked daily from dawn to dusk. He reported that there were shelters about every 10 miles which with bathrooms and running water. He said one of the most interesting things about the trip was what is called “Trail Magic.” John explained that people who live in “trail towns” (towns close to the trail) would often leave care packages along the trail for hikers to enjoy – things like firewood and food. He also said that sometimes the towns people would come up to the trail and have a cookout for the hikers. While he said the experience involved some of the most “intense living” he’s ever done, it was also a rewarding and worthwhile experience.
