April 17 Meeting of Spruce Pine Kiwanis

At the April 17 meeting, Teresa Emory, Parent to Parent Outreach Coordinator for Yancey and Mitchell Counties spoke to the group. This program falls under the Family Support Network and provides information and support to families who have a premature infant, a child with special needs, or a family grieving the death of a child. Teresa became involved with Parent to Parent after giving birth to premature twins and then having one of the twins die three days later due to complications. The Family Support Network linked her with a family who had experienced a similiar tragedy who understood what she was going through. Teresa reported that the program provides workshops to families as well as helps them find the resources they need including social service providers. They concentrate on families with children from birth to 5 years, but can also provide support for children up to age 18.
A picture of Teresa with Kiwanis President, David Pike and Board Member, Jack Hancox, is located in the Photo Gallery.
