April 24 Meeting of Spruce Pine Kiwanis

Jack Hancox, Kiwanis Program Director for April, rounded out a month of interesting programs on April 24 with a talk by Rhonda Gunter, history instructor at Mayland Community College, on the ‘mysterious Melungeons’, a mixed-race group predominately in the southern Appalachians. A rich variety of theories as to their ethnic, linguistic, geographical and cultural connections exists; however, no distinct ‘homeland’ has as yet been determined. DNA testing to unravel the mystery is ongoing and Melungeons have gone from being looked down on to ‘mixed and proud of it.’ Thanks to Rhonda Gunter for sharing with us about this little known group of people.
There was an Interclub at Banner Elk April 24 by Lewis, David Blevins, Jack Jones, Guy and Bob Thompson; and a visit to Lenoir April 19 by Lewis, Louise and Jack J.
