2007 Christmas Parade
Rules & Regulations
GENERAL INFORMATION and REGULATIONS
1. On Parade day all floats will check in at the designated check in point on
Roan Rd and will be directed to the lineup area. The “Parade Lineup” will
Start at Webb Funeral Home on Roan Rd and will run went on Roan Rd
Back towards Hwy 226 (Bakersville Hwy). The Parade will begin at the
Bridge on Roan Rd/Oak Ave and proceed east on Oak Ave. (Upper Street)
through downtown Spruce Pine on Oak Ave until it reaches the end of Oak
Ave where the Parade will conclude at Harrell Construction.
2. The 2007 theme for the parade is “TRADITIONS OF CHRISTMAS”.
3. The Parade will be held RAIN or SHINE.
4. All participants must submit a completed application with fee and have
permission to participate in the Parade. All applications must be received
no later than Friday, November 9, 2007.
5. The appropriate entry fees will be due with the application.
6. ENTRY FEES: $25.00 for (1) Float and (1) Vehicle. Each additional
vehicle will be $10.00 each. NOTE: Additional vehicles must be part of
the sponsoring organization (unit). All proceeds will go to the support and
advertisement of the Christmas Parade.
7. In mid-late November, you will be sent limited parade permits to enter line-
Up area. The permit will give you specific instruction and your line-up
Number. The permit must be displayed inside the windshield on the drivers’
side of the vehicle at all times. Any vehicle without the permit will not be
permitted to enter line-up area. The permit is an important tool to help
various parade announcers identify you float, the sponsoring group and will
be used by the parade judges.
8. The following is a list of those entries/floats NOT ACCEPTABLE as Parade
entries:
* All moving vehicles must be operated by licensed drivers
* Commercial Vehicles without substantial decorations and/or lights
* Lawn Mowers
* 4 Wheelers or Dirt Bikes
* Horse “In hitch” only
9. All entries / floats must reflect a Christmas theme, or the theme chosen by
parade committee, and “must not” be predominantly commercial in nature.
Organizations may display their names and greetings only on their unit.
10. It is your responsibility to arrange the pick-up of all float riders, band
members, etc. from the disband area located in the parking lots near
Harrell Builders.
11. No alcoholic beverages of any sort will be allowed before or during the
Parade. Anyone disobeying this rule will be removed from the Parade
and the violating group will not be allowed in the next year’s Parade.
The entire unit could be removed at the discretion of parade officials.
12. Your unit should look as described and accepted in your application (as
much as possible). This will help us to establish the lineup and assist the
parade announcers.
HORSES
1. Any unit and/or other animals MUST make arrangements to have animal
droppings “scooped” immediately. Please, no autos or trucks should be
used for picking up the droppings. Droppings may not be dumped at disband
area!
2. Horse drawn floats, horse drawn carriages or wagons only. No rider on
horses.
3. Horses shall be kept under control at all times. Absolutely no running will
be allowed.
4. Clubs will be limited to 10 horses per entry.
DAY OF THE PARADE

Tardiness may cost your participation in the Parade. You

way traffic (West to East) at 2:30 pm. Roan Road will be closed at 5:00 pm, and the police are instructed to allow no one to enter from that point.
1. All groups MUST assemble prior to arriving at the Line up check in
point and enter as a SINGLE GROUP. Under no circumstances will
individual group members be permitted to enter the area.
2. Space is limited at the Line Up area, and only those vehicles with the
official parking permits will be allowed to enter.
3. Roll call of all entries / floats will be conducted at 5:15 pm, once this is
complete; any unit that has not arrived will be eliminated from the
parade.
4. Judging of the Floats / Entries will be conducted at 5:20 pm.
FLOATS DESIGN
1. Floats should be constructed and decorated so that either side is equally
appealing.
2. If the theme is humorous make sure that no one can be offended by it.
All floats must reflect the theme of the parade, Christmas and must not
be predominately commercial in nature. All entries should send a
picture or sketch of their float / entry. Floats not meeting standards for
appearance will NOT be allowed in the Parade.
3. No unit other than the float designated by the Parade Committee as the
“Official Santa Float,” may have any individuals dressed as Santa or
Santa-like figures or representation.
BUILDING SPECIFICATIONS
1. The maximum dimensions of the floats shall not exceed: Length- 62 feet:
Height - 14 feet; Width - 12 feet.
2. No part of the frame, when fully decorated and loaded can be lower than
6 inches from the ground.
3. All props and structures on the deck must be fireproof, be of sound

construction and be professional in appearance.
4. If possible, the skirt should consist of decorative material.
5. Floats may bear the name of the organization/business and the name of
theme depicted by the float. All signs must be of high quality and
easily readable to spectators.
6. Letters on each float should fit into the overall size context of the float.
In most cases, the letters should be no more than 14 inches high. Size
of logos should be uniform with other words displayed on float.
7. GENERATORS: All generator ground wires should be in compliance
SECTION 150.6 of the National Electrical Code. All electrical lines
should be fused no larger than 15 amps. All generators MUST have
gas tanks of sufficient size to supply unit for duration of Parade.
There will be no refueling during the Parade.
8. If there is music on the float, it must be in concert with the Parade,
Christmas or religious theme.
9. Professionally built floats are available for rent. The floats will be
constructed and decorated along the lines suggested by the sketches
sent to Donnie Beard. They are approximately 28 feet long, 8 to 14
feet wide, and 12.5 feet high. Your name will be on each side of the
float in regular block letters. There will be a maximum of two sponsors
per float with an additional charge of $30.00 for each additional sponsor.
The cost for floats will be $399.00. This amount includes Delivery, Setup
and Fuel Surcharge. THERE IS A MAXIMUM LIMIT OF 15 RIDERS
PER FLOAT. For safety reasons “No Hay or Straw is to Be Put On Any
Rental Float”. Payment must be received before 4:30 pm November 9th.

FLOAT RIDERS AND WALKERS
1. For floats, which have standing riders, there should be safety railings
and/or supports. Flooring must have adequate strength to safely hold
all riders. No sharp projections shall be present about the perimeter of

the float from a height of ground level to seven feet above ground.
2. An adult must accompany any float riders under the age of 12 years old.
3. Float sponsors may use up to 10 walkers with their floats. They must be
costumed to comply with the general theme of the float.
4. The Parade will be held RAIN OR SHINE. Dress warm, be safe and have
fun.
